Sir James Nimmo Crawford Doig

Glaswegian merchant navy officer Jim Doig launched his business career in 1947 with the formation of United Box Company (later United Empire Box) to manufacture cartons and boxes.

The company expanded rapidly in the post-war industrial era. At its peak in the 1970s and early 1980s, UEB Industries employed 3300 people. It moved into carpets with the purchase of Bremworth in 1967, establishing spinning and scouring plants around the country and exporting products to some 40 countries.

Doig was a leading advocate of a union with Australia in the days before CER. He was also the inaugural chairmanship of the Child Health Research Foundation, which was launched in 1971 by Rotary International.
