Hamilton entrepreneur Bill Gallagher, a natural leader with excellent communications skills, built a family-owned electric-fence business into a world beater.

Gallagher Group branched into security fences, fuel pumps, plastic moulding and swipe cards. In 2003 it linked up with US Security International as a way to get its security system Cardex into the United States market, worth an estimated $1.2 billion a year.

Bill Gallagher won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2003, adding to a trophy cabinet of honours for his business success.

Gallagher's skills made him a favourite guest for seminars and training sessions in New Zealand and overseas.
