Sir Peter Herbert Elworthy

When Peter Elworthy died suddenly in 2004, tributes ranged across the spectrum of the community.

The South Canterbury farming and business leader had always had a high public profile, from his days in the deer farming industry to his national leadership of Federated Farmers of New Zealand during the 1980s.

Elworthy's business interests were equally strong, from his role in the founding of the Ravensdown fertiliser co-operative to being a director of Auckland's Sky City casino. He also championed business sustainability and opposed genetic engineering.

Elworthy's many directorships included the Reserve Bank of New Zealand and the New Zealand Rural Trust.
