Sir Richard Henry Alwyn Carter

The third generation of a family sawmilling and forestry dynasty, accountant Richard Carter was responsible for creating in 1985 what was then New Zealand's fourth-largest public company.

Carter Holt Harvey, the merger of forester Carter Holt Holdings and manufacturer Alex Harvey Industries, became a group of international standing under Carter's farsighted executive chairmanship.

The merger, which the down-to-earth Carter executed with his twin brother Ken, was one of several major deals that helped internationalise the group.

Under Carter's father, Alwyn, the former family company, Carter Consolidated, acquired Hawke's Bay timber merchant Robert Holt & Sons, having earlier successfully negotiated rights to mill the Kaingaroa State Forest in the Central North Island.
