Peter Hanbury Masfen

Peter Masfen will be remembered as one of the wine industry's leading and most successful investors.

His long relationship with Montana Group (NZ) changed in 2001 when the company was taken over by UK liquor giant Allied Domecq after a protracted battle for control with brewer Lion Nathan.

A New Zealand representative rower in his early life and an accountant by profession, Masfen worked for the Auckland firm of Porter Wigglesworth & Grayburn, becoming a partner.

He consolidated various businesses, land and investments in Collingwood Holdings, which became part of Corporate Investments (CIL). The company eventually changed its name to Montana to reflect its most-prized asset.
