Dr Donald Thomas Brash

Don Brash completed 14 years as New Zealand's top and most successful central banker before entering politics.

Brash was an economist of international standing, sought after by economists, commentators and journalists during New Zealand's second wave of economic reform in the mid-1990s. He never once mixed monetary policy with politics and, like in his previous jobs, he maintained courteous relations with staff and the public.

Born in Wanganui and educated at schools in Wanganui and Christchurch, and at the University of Canterbury and the Australian National University, he held a number of important jobs in the private sector before his appointment to the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in 1988.
