Sir Roderick Sheldon Deane

No business leader has served the public and private sectors in New Zealand with more distinction than Roderick Deane.

He joined the Reserve Bank where he rose to be chief economist, head of the economic department and deputy governor.

Deane was able to straddle the sometimes competing worlds of private business and the public sector while holding his own in academia.

He is credited with shifting the focus of economics away from Keynesian-style intervention and state planning toward a greater reliance on markets and stable monetary and fiscal policy.

He enjoyed a stellar career outside the Reserve Bank that included chairing the State Services Commission and serving as chief executive of the Electricity Corporation, chief executive and managing director of Telecom.
