John Packard Goulter - KNZM

John Goulter had already made his mark in corporate life when, in 1988, he was appointed chief executive of Auckland International Airport.

His achievement was to turn a tired and inefficient airport into a world-class institution with a wide range of attractions and facilities.

Goulter guided the airport through its listing on the Stock Exchange after the government sold its majority stake in the entity in 1998.

As managing director of the new company, he developed airport land profitably and created a user-friendly mini-city. New facilities included McDonald's and a 24-hour-a-day supermarket.

Goulter also turned around staff culture from that of processing passengers to offering first-class, friendly service.
