Sir Wilson James Whineray - KNZM OBE
Wilson Whineray made his initial contribution to New Zealand through sport when, as All Black captain from 1958-65, he led the national team through a golden age of rugby. But he would also play a key role in business leadership.
Whineray joined Alex Harvey Industries in 1969. It merged with Carter Holt Holdings in 1985 and he became deputy managing director of Carter Holt Harvey, retiring as chairman and a director in 2003.
Whineray was also a director of outside companies and a tireless worker for charity and sports administration.
He was awarded the OBE in 1961, selected as Sportsman of the Year for 1965 and knighted in 1998.
