Sir Laurence Houghton Stevens - CBE
Laurie Stevens joined Auckland Knitting Mills in 1946, became secretary in 1948, manager in 1952 and managing director from 1954 until his retirement in 1980.
He became a leading figure in the New Zealand textile industry and manufacturing.
Stevens served as president of the Apparel and Textile Federation of New Zealand and two terms as president of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. During the latter term, 1981-83, he played a leading role in negotiations with Australia over the Closer Economic Relations treaty.
He was also a professional company director, serving on or chairing the boards of a variety of companies, including a major involvement with Auckland International Airport.
