Sir Stephen Robert Tindall - KNZM

Stephen Tindall had retailing in the blood. He worked 12 years for Auckland retailer George Court & Son, a company founded by his great-grandfather, before opening his first discount store, The Warehouse, in 1982.

The business boomed with the lifting of tariffs on imported goods. It was floated on the New Zealand Stock Exchange in 1994 and became the country's most successful retailer.

Tindall was managing director until 2001 and again from 2003 to 2004. He used part of the wealth he created to establish the Tindall Foundation, a charity set up to improve family and community life and foster enterprise.
