Trevor Scott became an accountancy partner after graduating from the University of Otago and in 1988 he formed his own advisory firm, T D Scott.

He was one of several businesspeople who regenerated Dunedin's enterprises in the 1980s and 1990s. He was involved in publishing, manufacturing and hospitality and invested in Central Otago's emerging wine industry.

Scott's business connections were put to good use at his alma mater, leading to the commercialisation of Otago's leadership in medical research and biotechnology.

He was diagnosed with cancer and donated $1 million to the T D Scott Professorial Chair in Urology, leading to the formation of a trust that is raising millions more for research and teaching in the area of urology.
