Maurice Thompson
Val Barfoot and Maurice Thompson created a real estate firm that is synonymous with real estate in New Zealand today. Val Barfoot bought a Newmarket land agency business in 1923 and eleven years later Maurice Thompson joined the firm. The business boomed following the end of the Second World War and by 1956 they had 15 branches throughout Auckland.
Barfoot & Thompson is now New Zealand's largest privately owned real estate company, and is still run by the Barfoot and Thompson families. The business that Val and Maurice grew now has over 1,400 salespeople in 62 branches throughout Auckland and Northland.
Maurice passed away in 1968. Val retired in 1973 after 50 years in the business, and died in 1987.
