Sir Jack Newman

The Newman name is best associated with stagecoaches and buses yet it was behind the huge forest and fibreboard plant on Nelson's doorstep and an independent airline, Newmans Airways, that became Ansett New Zealand.

Jack Newman, the most important member of the family, joined Newman Bros, in 1920, a business dating from 1879. He became managing director in 1935 and founded Transport (Nelson) Holdings -- later renamed TNL Group - in 1938.

Active in the community, Newman also served as president of the New Zealand National Travel Association and was active in the Passenger Transport Federation and the Pacific Area Travel Association.
