Amy Maria Hellaby
The untimely deaths of Amy Hellaby's brother-in-law and sister-in-law in 1900 and husband in 1902 left her the head of two families and in charge of a large meat company.
She succeeded on her own, expanding Auckland-based R & W Hellaby, supervising the completion of the family mansion and caring for a large extended family.
During World War I she moved to London to be near her sons and nephews serving on the Western Front and afterwards directed the company until younger family members came through.
She was also responsible for the opening of R & W Hellaby's Shortland works at Otahuhu in 1910.
