Sir Francis Henry Renouf

Wellington-born Frank Renouf was a prisoner-of-war in Germany from 1941-45 and completed his education at the University of Oxford after the war.

He became a sharebroker in 1950, a job that was to be his mainstay for the next 38 years. He established a national share index in 1957, known as the NZUC (later Barclays), and was chairman of New Zealand United Corporation from 1960-83, Renouf Corporation from 1984-87, Renouf Properties from 1985-88 and Renouf Underwriters Pty from 1980.

Renouf was a casualty of the 1987 sharemarket crash but the losses he and his companies suffered did not undo his sterling contribution to New Zealand.
