Christchurch-born James Maddren pioneered the exporting and processing of venison and game, sending the first shipments of venison to the US in 1952-53 and later to Europe and Asia.

He was responsible for setting up the first experimental deer farm at Lincoln College, Canterbury, in 1968, to determine the feasibility of farming deer.

He was also a leading light in promoting manufactured exports through manufacturers' groups and trade missions and a prominent company chairman and director.

Maddren's charitable work included the St John Ambulance Association, refurbishment of Canterbury Museum and the businesshouse appeal for a South Island bone-marrow transplant unit.
