Sir Harcourt Clarke Caughey - KBE CStJ
Harcourt Caughey was an old-world figure committed to hard work and public service.
He joined the family's Auckland department store, Smith & Caughey, in 1930 and worked there for 63 years until his death - 30 of them as managing director and chairman.
An All Black from 1932-37, Caughey was best known for his service to Auckland Hospital Board, where he was a member for 25 years and chairman for 15.
Caughey was also active in the Medical Research Council, the Auckland Medical Research Foundation and the University of Auckland School of Medicine.
He was knighted in 1972 for his contribution to health administration.
