Don McLaren, owner of Auckland-based animal remedies company Bomac Laboratories, made the headlines when Bomac made a significant donation to Massey University's Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.

Bomac became the Massey Institute's corporate partner - a relationship that went far beyond mere sponsorship.

McLaren's community service was demonstrated in other areas. A keen racing man, he was president of the Auckland Racing Club, which he helped restore to profit through good management and selling surplus club land.

He also served on a number of community and professional organisations, including the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Association and the New Zealand Racing Conference.
