David Nathan
David Nathan arrived in Russell in 1840, establishing a tent shop on the foreshore and later buying his first trading site in Auckland.
David was a storekeeper, auctioneer, ship agent and active community leader, elected to the first Auckland Borough Council, Commissioner for Port of Auckland, President of Auckland Chamber of Commerce and President of the Auckland Hebrew Congregation.
Nathan founded L.D. Nathan and Company, one of New Zealand’s largest companies employing 17,000 staff before being merged into Lion Nathan.
