Thomas John Edmonds
Thomas John Edmonds began producing “Sure to Rise” baking powder in 1879, the factory making over one million tins by 1912 and becoming a famous Christchurch landmark. The iconic Edmonds cookbook was first published in 1908 and remains a top seller. Edmonds was a pioneer in industrial policies introducing a five day, 40-hour week in the depression.
Thomas and his wife Jane were active philanthropists and supported organisations such as the Red Cross and Plunket Societies. St Saviour's Orphanage,The Salvation Amy, Rotary Club and the Y.M.C.A.as well as contributing significantly to the architectural history of Christchurch.
