Sir Ronald Powell Carter - KNZM
When Ron Carter graduated from Auckland University College in 1958 with a masters degree in civil engineering he could hardly have envisaged the spectacular success of his future career.
He joined Gray Watts & Beca in 1959 and over the next 41 years played a key role in developing the group into one of Australasias most successful engineering consultancies.
Carter worked well with managing director George Beca, who expanded the firm by opening offices in Australia and Papua New Guinea in the 1960s, and Carter followed suit in the 1970s, opening offices in Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei.
Carter was knighted in 1998 for services to engineering and business and in 2000 was awarded one of Auckland Universitys first honorary doctorates in engineering.
